Teardrops
| By Jennifer
Melancholy is a gloomy, yet inescapable feeling. Sometimes, it brings a pain so overwhelming that you feel a scorching ache in your heart. Other times, it arrives subtly and before you know it, you are surrounded by an air of misery and sadness. However, despite the discomfort and pain, melancholy is an integral part of our lives- without it, will happiness really have a true meaning?
Do not underestimate the power of a beautifully written sad song- it represents the strength of the author to acknowledge their emotions and depicts the author’s power and will to overcome it. We listen to sad songs when we need something to relate and cry to, or when we are feeling burnt out and blue from life problems.
Sad songs can range from the typical slow pop songs to any genre, really. Share the most impactful sad song in your life, maybe the one that helped you get through your darkest moments, or the ones you go to for a good cry on a bad day. We look forward to hearing from you!

WEEK 3: RHewind
Rewind
| By Justin Chia
Nostalgia is a strong feeling. It tries to bring back the simpler and happier times we had into our increasingly complicated and sophisticated modern way of life. The funny thing is that this trend of nostalgia and retro is more prevalent with the younger generation, which is ironic as do we really have much to be nostalgic about in our short 20-odd years of being alive?
From fashion trends such as chonky sneakers and bright, neon coloured windbreakers reminiscent of the 90s to analogue means of consuming media such as film photography and listening to music on vinyl players, no one would be able to totally steer clear of this trend. In popular culture, nostalgia reigns supreme. Even in modern media streaming services such as Netflix, the most popular shows include F.R.I.E.N.D.S, a show which debuted more than 25 years ago and yet still manages to influence modern culture to this day.
Music can help us RHewind into the past and allow us to relive the good old days. Perhaps it is your mom’s favourite song that she always sang to you, or a song that your dad always played in the car while sending you to school. Old is gold. If you have any retro or classic songs that remind you of fond memories, or just because you simply like the song, share it with the rest of Raffles Hall through RH Jukebox!

Love Songs
| By Ashley Chua
Love appears to be one of those complex emotions that nobody can seem to figure out. It can sometimes seem like a feeling of pure joy, and at others, agonizing pain. Is it any surprise, then, to see the ubiquity of love songs?
In fact, it would seem that even with their vastly different styles, the theme of love cuts across all genres of music. On the classical side, you have Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony's beautiful 4th movement. Dedicated to his wife, you can just feel the raw emotion he must have infused into those notes. Jazz has no shortage of heartstring tugging interludes as well, with many jazz standards including Erroll Garner's "Misty", and the oh so famous "Fly Me to The Moon" by Bart Howard, perhaps most famously sung by Frank Sinatra himself. In the pop realm, of course, you've got a plethora of songs to choose from. Practically every single pop artist has one of these tunes on their repertoire. Hell, some have even made a career out of these types (looking at you, Taylor Swift). To introduce a slightly older pop song, which also happens to be a personal favourite, try Journey's "Send Her my Love". On the slightly heavier side, Guns and Roses' "Sweet Child O'Mine" is a classic rock song that isn't a ballad, but still gets me excited everytime I listen to it. On the even heavier side, you've even got metal tunes about love, such as Avenged Sevenfold's "a Little Piece of Heaven", which shows that even in death, love can go on... Though maybe not in the way one might expect.
So it would seem that the universality of love presents itself in this way, with all genres embracing this fundamental emotion that we just can't seem to figure out. Do you have any other suggestions for songs might be added to this list? Do send them to us, on RH’s hallwide jukebox event!

Motivation
| By Wing
Have you ever listened to your favourite song on a long day and instantly felt energised? Perhaps, it is no surprise to you that a good song can help one tough out the worse of life’s challenges. For instance, research shows that music can affect ones sympathetic nervous system, (which is in charge of responding to stress and danger) making listeners less stressed and more alert.
But who cares about the science! Music is a political tool to unite and rally; “The Internationale”, a prominent socialist anthem sings of the common people’s plight and urges them towards revolution. Music is a tool to empower and accept; “Rise”, by Katy Perry, acknowledges her struggle with depression and validates the experience of other survivors, affirming they are strong enough to live on. Music is a source of solace in a harsh world; “ä½ çš„ç”案” has been greatly popularised during the COVID outbreak, with powerful lyrics augmented by its passionate melody and beat. Motivational music makes us feel understood, assuring we are not alone in our experiences and providing us with the confidence that we have the ability to endure on.
What is the song that stirs up hope in your life? What is the song you turn to when you are in a dark place? Share it with your peers through the jukebox event, let it carry your struggles and hopes in life. We will persevere together.
